Exploring Our World of Chemistry
Registration information can be found at Tyler Junior College Continuing Studies
https://www.tjc.edu/continuingstudies
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Students will engage in a number of learning opportunities revolving around chemistry in our world. Through demonstrations and hands-on learning activities, students will make models of Earth systems and study how natural and man-made events can alter the world around us.
PREREQUISITES: none
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After completion of this course, the student will be able to do the following:
Build models in a Petri dish that simulate Earth Systems
Follow investigative procedures to study a phenomenon such as solar energy or polymers like SLIME
Discuss how natural and man-made events can alter Earth systems.
Have an appreciation for the importance of chemistry in their daily lives
CONTENT OUTLINE:
Introduction to chemistry and safety in the laboratory
Discussion about what systems are and how we can model them
Using chemical reactions to investigate air pollution
Model Earth events such as volcanoes, meteor strikes, and plate movement (earthquakes)
Study cloud formation and the water cycle
Investigate how erosion can change land forms
